On Independence Day, many of us attended a parade or service honoring those who gave their lives to protect our freedoms. But what about the veterans who are still with us? How can we ever repay our veterans for the sacrifices they, too, have made?
Though no compensation seems nearly enough, we must do what we can, knowing that anything less is unthinkable.
Last October, for the second straight year, the Washtenaw County Board of Commissioners approved a millage that raised money to care for the emergency needs of the county’s veterans. Prior to 2009, the county paid for these services out of its general fund.
As vice chairman of the board, I strongly supported this millage. And I’m more convinced than ever that we did the right thing. Read more…
